Dr. Martha Kanter, Under Secretary of Education, to Address IBHE

Under Secretary for the U.S. Department of Education to discuss
federal efforts to improve educational attainment in the
United States as the Board considers fiscal 2014 budget recommendations

Springfield – Dr. Martha Kanter, Under Secretary for the U.S. Department of Education, and a national leader in postsecondary education and adult and career-technical education, will speak to the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) at its February 5 meeting. Her remarks will highlight key U.S. Department of Education initiatives targeted on increasing educational attainment in order to achieve the federal government’s goal: to have the best educated and most competitive workforce in the world by 2020.

“We are very fortunate that Dr. Kanter will lead the Board in a conversation about critical policy initiatives aimed at increasing the number of college graduates in this country,” Carrie J. Hightman, IBHE Chairwoman said. “Dr. Kanter’s impressive career in postsecondary education and her policy expertise has equipped her well for her responsibilities at the U.S. Department of Education to improve college access, affordability, quality and completion. We look forward to the opportunity to discuss Illinois’ endeavors to increase the number of Illinoisans with a postsecondary degree to 60% by 2025.”

The Illinois Board of Higher Education also will turn its attention to recommendations for state spending for colleges and universities by taking action on the $2 billion fiscal year 2014 budget for higher education operations and grants.

The IBHE will meet Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Kendall College, located at 900 North Branch Street, Chicago.
