NEW BOARD MEMBER, STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE JOIN IBHE
SPRINGFIELD - Lee H. Walker, president and founder
of a Chicago public policy organization, has been named to
the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) by Governor
George Ryan. In addition, Katie Cox, a graduate student at
the University of Illinois at Springfield, has been elected
as the Board's new student representative.
Walker is a member of the Midwest Higher Education Commission
and a former member of the Illinois Community College Board.
He is president of The New Coalition for Economic and Social
Change, which he founded in 1993 to promote economic and social
advancement for African Americans through advocacy of self-help
programs.
"I thank Governor Ryan for this appointment to the Board
of Higher Education," Walker said. "I look forward
to working with other Board members to help ensure that Illinois
colleges and universities continue to offer high-quality educational
programs at an affordable price."
Walker writes a monthly column for Crain's Chicago Business.
He is a graduate of Fordham University in New York with a
degree in economics and business management. He serves as
Chairman of the American Fund of the University of the Free
State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He is also on the Board
of Directors of the Heartland Institute of Chicago.
Katie Cox, who graduated from Eastern Illinois University
in May, was named the University's Outstanding Senior of the
Year at graduation ceremonies. She earned her B.A. in political
science and her graduate work at UIS will be in policy studies.
Cox served as Chair of the IBHE Student Advisory Committee
and succeeds John Thompson as the Board's student representative.
She has been outspoken on issues of affordability and accountability
as a student advocate.
"I am grateful to the Student Advisory Committee for
the confidence they have shown in me," Cox said of her
election as student Board member. "I will strive to follow
John Thompson in serving as a strong, unwavering voice for
the students of Illinois."
