AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ART STUDENT WINS GOVERNOR'S AWARD IN STATE
ARTISTS COMPETITION
SPRINGFIELD - Ryan Shultz of Libertyville, a student at
the American Academy of Art, has been named recipient of the Governor's
Medallion of Excellence for his oil painting entitled, "Girl
With Clementines," at the Awards Ceremony for the 2005 Annual
Collegiate Artists Competition held Saturday, May 7, at Southwestern
Illinois College in Belleville.
Dr. Christopher J. Ward, vice chairman of the Illinois State Board
of Education, represented the Office of the Governor and presented
the Governor's Medallion, one of four $1,000 purchase awards in
the second annual artists competition for undergraduate students
at Illinois colleges and universities. Shultz also was honored in
the 2004 competition as a winner in the painting category.
The juried competition was sponsored by Governor Rod R. Blagojevich,
the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College
Board, the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities
and the Illinois higher education community.
Schultz was among 306 students who submitted 750 entries for the
2005 competition. Robert Sill, curator of art for the Illinois State
Museum, served as juror. In all, Sill selected 45 finalists, including
the four purchase award winners and seven winners in artistic categories,
for the Awards in Excellence ceremony held at the William and Florence
Schmidt Art Center on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College.
Other purchase award winners included:
- Daphne Arthur of Brooklyn, New York, winner of the Federation
of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities, for her oil
painting entitled, "Pies para que los quiero, si tengo alas
pa volar." She is a student at the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago.
- Daniel Jakoubek of Peoria, winner of the Illinois Community
College Award, for his cyanotype on paper entitled, "See
What Happens." He is a student at Bradley University.
- Christen Leitza of West Dundee, a student at Judson College,
winner of the Illinois Board of Higher Education Award for her
charcoal drawing entitled, "Solitude."
The works of all winners and finalists will be exhibited at the
Schmidt Art Center through June 3. The works also can be viewed
online at http://www.ibhe.org/art/.
Winners selected by the juror in various artistic categories included:
- Amy Ferreri of Moline, a student at Illinois State University,
in ceramics for her untitled work.
- Young Sun Han of Chicago, a student at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago, in photography for an inkjet print, "Ken
vs. Sharyar, London."
- Lindsey Karnuth of Grayslake, a student at the College of Lake
County, in drawing for an untitled work.
- Joseph Nichols of Macomb, a student at Western Illinois University,
in printmaking, for "Sins of the Father."
- InJung Oh of Vernon Hills, a student at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago, in painting, for her oil on canvas, "Friendship."
Oh was the winner of the Governor's Medallion award in 2004.
- Debra Virgens of McHenry, a student at McHenry County College,
in sculpture, for a work entitled, "Pull Up a Chair."
Virgens last year won the Illinois Community College Board Award.
- Jason Vote of Joliet, a student at Joliet Junior College, in
mixed media, for his acrylic, ink, pencil, and paper on panel
entitled, "Cycle of Addiction."
All winners of artistic categories received a $250 honorarium.
Finalists for the 2005 competition, each of whom received a $200
honorarium, included:
- Adam Bozarth of Quincy, a student at Western Illinois University,
for a silk screen entitled, "Self Portrait About Work."
- Gregory Britton of Glenview, a student at Oakton Community College,
for a photograph entitled, "Seattle Waterfront."
- Evan Burnette of Springfield, a student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, for blown glass entitled, "Glass
Flower Arrangement."
- Elizabeth Cockrum of Hoffman Estates, a student at Columbia
College Chicago, for a photograph entitled, "Carol Stream,
IL."
- Alan Dachman of Evanston, a student at Oakton Community College,
for an acrylic on canvas painting entitled, "Expressive Journey
2."
- Caleb Engstrom of Forley, Iowa, a student at Greenville College,
for an untitled acrylic and wax painting on canvas.
- Janet Esquivel of Cicero, a student at Morton College, for a
photograph entitled, "Stagnant in Two Worlds."
- Joseph Falzone of Naperville, a student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, for glass work entitled, "Continuation
Series #3."
- Jacob Foran of Urbana, a student at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, for mixed media entitled, "Natural Instinct."
- Devin Gearing of Cypress, a student at Shawnee Community College,
for an oil painting entitled, "Solitude." Gearing won
an award in painting in the 2004 competition.
- Margie Glass of Morris, a student at Joliet Junior College,
for an oil painting entitled, "Rapture."
- Tyler Harris of Springfield, a student at Springfield College
in Illinois, for a pastel entitled, "Pastel Study #1."
- John Hui Kim of Chicago, a student at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago, for a color photograph entitled, "Your
Silence."
- Young ha Kim of Normal, a student at Illinois State University,
for an oil painting entitled, "Self Portrait."
- Emma Kingsbery of Elsah, a student at Principia College, for
a cut paper picture entitled "Nosepicker."
- Erika Konopack of Joliet, a student at Joliet Junior College,
for an oil painting entitled, "Inside."
- Cheng-Yung Kuo of Homewood, a student at South Suburban College,
for a photograph entitled, "Capture."
- William LaGory of Downers Grove, a student at College of DuPage,
for a ceramic sculpture entitled, "Through Fly Eyes."
- Chad Lavin of Taylorville, a student at Lincoln Land Community
College, for an oil painting entitled, "Foliage."
- Andrew Leventis of Chicago, a student at the American Academy
of Art, for an oil painting entitled, "Galina."
- Amanda Logsdon of Keokuk, Iowa, a student at Western Illinois
University, for a silk screen entitled, "Look What You've
Done."
- Scott Meyer of Woodstock, a student at Northern Illinois University,
for an oil painting entitled, "Eos."
- Lauren Morgese of Elmwood Park, a student at Triton College,
for a charcoal on paper drawing entitled, "Jason."
- Marcie Oakes of Bartlett, a student at Northern Illinois University,
for acrylic on masonite paintings entitled, "Saab,"
"Skoda," and "Audi."
- Susan Przada of Columbia, a student at Southwestern Illinois
College, for a ceramic and mixed media piece entitled, "Raku
fired horse hair & Ferric Chloride #1."
- Sean Roosevelt of St. Joseph, a student at Parkland College,
for an untitled plaster sculpture.
- Jane Ryder of Peoria, a student at Bradley University, for a
pastel entitled, "Solstice." Ryder also was a finalist
in the 2004 competition.
- Charlotte Schroeder of Bloomington, Indiana, a student at Bradley
University, for a cyanotype and mixed media work entitled, "Unto
Life."
- Charles Taylor of Macomb, a student at Western Illinois University,
for a silk screen entitled, "Persona 4."
- Elizabeth Thielemann of Cahokia, a student at Southwestern Illinois
College, for a marker on paper drawing entitled, "Sitting
on One's Hands."
- James Waynauskas of Sugar Grove, a student at Northern Illinois
University, for a photograph entitled, "Skater Girl."
- Nick Wood of Decatur, a student at Richland Community College,
for an untitled acrylic painting.
- Joe Yang of Chicago, a student at the University of Chicago,
for an animation entitled, "The Date."
- William Zenisek of Stickney, a student at Morton College, for
a photograph entitled, "Identity Crisis."
