GOVERNOR NAMES FORMER FACULTY MEMBERS TO IBHE
SPRINGFIELD - An emeritus professor of chemistry from Chicago
State University and the former chairperson of the Division of Psychology
and Counseling at Governors State University have been appointed
to terms on the Illinois Board of Higher Education by Governor Rod
Blagojevich.
Elmer L. Washington has been emeritus professor for the past five
years at CSU where he was president of the Chicago State Chapter
of the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) and held a variety
of academic and administrative positions. He began his teaching
career at Chicago State in 1969, and served as Vice President for
Research and Development, Acting Vice President for Student Affairs,
Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean of Natural Sciences
and Mathematics, and chief contract negotiator for UPI from 1992
to 2000.
Washington holds bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from
Texas Southern University, did graduate study at the University
of Chicago, and received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the
Illinois Institute of Technology. He has served in a number of civic,
religious, and health-related volunteer positions. He lives in Park
Forest. He replaces Thomas R. Lamont, who resigned from the Board
to become Acting Executive Director of the IBHE. His term expires
in January 2009.
Addison E. Woodward, Jr., chaired the Division of Psychology and
Counseling at GSU from 1979 through 2002, overseeing an academic
unit with more than 40 full-time and part-time faculty and 200 undergraduate
and 350 graduate majors. Under his leadership, the counseling and
psychology programs sought and maintained national accreditation.
He is an emeritus professor at GSU and also taught at Albion College
in Michigan.
Woodward earned his B.S. in psychology summa cum laude from C.W.
Post College in Brookville, N.Y., received a master's degree from
Connecticut College, and earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology
from the University of Toronto.
Woodward also has extensive collective bargaining experience. He
was one of two faculty members who initiated the collective bargaining
movement at GSU, and he served in several capacities for Local 3500
of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), including as secretary,
treasurer, the GSU representative to the AFT negotiation team. He
resides in Palos Park. He succeeds Jerry Blakemore on the Board
for a term that expires in January 2009.
