School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago Student Wins Governor’s Award In State Artists Competition

SPRINGFIELD – Hsuan-Hsiu Hung, of Chicago, a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has been named recipient of the Governor’s Medallion of Excellence for her painting, “ Suitcase No. 2,” in the 2007 Annual Collegiate Artists Competition.

Bob Arya, Senior Advisor to Governor Blagojevich, presented the Governor’s Medallion, one of four purchase prizes awarded at the Awards in Excellence Ceremony for the fourth annual competition, held Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art in Des Plaines.

The juried competition was sponsored by Governor Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College Board, the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities and the Illinois higher education community.

Hung was among 279 student-artists who submitted 719 entries in this year’s competition. David Russick, the Gallery Director of the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University–Purdue University in Indianapolis, served as juror for the competition. In all, Russick selected 50 finalists for the awards ceremony held at Oakton.

An exhibit of the 2007 competition is open to the public at Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art, at 1600 E. Golf Road in Des Plaines, through June 21.

Other purchase award winners include:

  • Richard Raggi of Glenview, winner of the Illinois Board of Higher Education Prize for his print, “Art?” He is a student at Eastern Illinois University. Chairwoman Carrie Hightman presented the award on behalf of the Board.
  • Cynthia Lehman of Oswego, winner of the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities Award for her photograph, “Illinois Farm.” She is a student at the College of DuPage. David Tretter, President of the Federation, presented the organization’s award.
  • Jason Vote of Joliet, winner of the Illinois Community College Board Award for his drawing, “Self Portrait: April - June 2006.” He is a student at Joliet Junior College. Suzanne Morris, a Member of the community college board, presented the agency’s award.

Category winners include:

  • Rebecca Aurich of Charleston, winner in painting for students attending four-year institutions, for her painting entitled, “Female Orb.” She attends Eastern Illinois University.
  • Mary Beth Hassan of Peoria, winner in painting for students attending two-year institutions, for her painting, “Afghani Cake.” She attends Illinois Central College.
  • Alexander Carlson of Joliet, winner in ceramics for his piece, “Milligrams and Membrane.” He attends Joliet Junior College .
  • Matthew Schultz of Springfield, winner in printmaking for his print, “ Freedom Pass . ” He attends the University of Illinois at Springfield.
  • Jessica Wright of Hanover Park, winner in fiber for her piece, “ Linden.” She attends Shimer College .

Honorable Mention recipients include:

  • J. Anthony Kosar of Lisle, for his painting, “Shades of Green .” He attends the American Academy of Art.
  • Lourdes Harper of Chicago, for her painting, “Wishing.” She attends Northeastern Illinois University.
  • Esteban del Valle of Carbondale, for his drawing, “Self-Reflection 13.” He attends Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
  • John Powell of Inverness, for his photograph, “Fish Wrestler.” He attends the American Academy of Art.
  • Patrick Vertino of LaGrange, for his drawing, “Tools .” He attends the American Academy of Art.
  • Christopher Medellin of Romeoville, for his drawing, “Three Tons.” He attends Joliet Junior College.
  • Kristina Smith of Chicago, for her painting, “Tequila Sunrise.” She attends the American Academy of Art.
  • Nicole Wilkin of Homer Glen, for her painting, “Hunters Club.” She attends Joliet Junior College.
  • Edward Tonkin of Elsah, for his painting, “The ‘V’ Tree.” He attends Principia College.
  • William Winter of Greenville , for his painting, “ Dani.” He attends Greenville College.

Finalists for the 2007 Annual Collegiate Artists Competition include:

  • Rebecca Barton of East Alton, a student at Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, for her sculpture, “ Ulmus Cuprous.”
  • Jennifer Bozek of Park Ridge, a student at Dominican University , for her painting, “ Pool.”
  • Anna Bystrek of Cicero , a student at Dominican University, for her photograph, “ A.”
  • Erika Cabrera of Chicago, a student at the American Academy of Art , for her painting, “ Louie’s Tags.”
  • Chris Caldwell of Macomb , a student at Western Illinois University, for his print, “ Future Vision.”
  • Jay Carver of Evanston , a student at Triton College, for his drawing, “ Hydrangea In Water Glass.”
  • Tonya Crouch of East Carondelet , a student at Western Illinois University, for her ceramic piece, “ Panorama.”
  • Michelle Fernandez of Roscoe , a student at the Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg, for her drawing, “ Untitled 2.”
  • Grace Hasty of Dunlap , a student at Western Illinois University, for her photograph, “ Composition with Starlings.”
  • Salvador Jimenez of Chicago , a student at Robert Morris College, for his painting, “ Huecos (Gaps).”
  • Kristen Kasper of Tinley Park, a student at Eastern Illinois University , for her painting, “ Leave a Message...”
  • Colleen Kawaters of Macomb , a student at Western Illinois University, for her sculpture, “ Hidden Reliquary.”
  • Cheng-Yung Kuo of Chicago , a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, for his photograph, “ Reflections on Reality....#23.”
  • Kathryn Lischwe of River Forest , a student at Dominican University, for her photograph, “ Suspended Color.”
