SPRINGFIELD –  Allan Karnes, a longtime faculty member and administrator at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has been appointed to the Illinois Board of Higher Education by Governor Pat Quinn.

Dr. Karnes, who worked for accounting firms in Indianapolis and Carbondale before becoming an instructor in the SIUC School of Accountancy in 1981, is KPMG research professor in accountancy and, since April of this year, associate dean of the College of Business. He served as director of the School of Accountancy from 1995 to 2004.

“We are pleased to welcome Professor Karnes to the Board of Higher Education,” IBHE , said. “He will bring a wealth of experience and involvement in higher education, with an important campus perspective as well as a broader vantage point stemming from his extensive professional activities.”

 Dr. Karnes has degrees in political science and accounting from Ball State University and is a 1986 graduate of the SIU law school. His teaching and research specialty is in the field of taxation. He is co-author of the book, The American Legal System: Foundations, Processes and Norms, published in 2003, and has an extensive roster of articles published in professional journals.

He also has been active in the IBHE Faculty Advisory Council, serving as chair of the group from 2003 to 2006, and in campus governance. He has served as vice president of the Faculty Senate, was a member of several campus budget panels, and twice was a member of search committees for selecting a new SIUC chancellor.

Dr. Karnes is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Illinois Bar Association, and has served as an expert witness in civil litigation cases.
