IBHE SETS HEARINGS ON MINORITY FACULTY STUDY
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Board of Higher Education
(IBHE) is seeking public comment on issues related to increasing
the number of minority faculty at colleges and universities.
Two public hearings have been set to solicit testimony, and
plans are underway to establish a web-based site as an additional
outlet for public opinion. The first hearing will be held
from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. September 24, 2002 in Conference Room
H of the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois
at Springfield. The second hearing is scheduled for 1 to 3
p.m. October 4 in Room 9-040 at the Thompson Center in Chicago.
The study of minority faculty in higher education is the result
of an executive order issued by Governor George Ryan. Public
comment is sought, in particular, on these issues:
- The availability of minority faculty - examining the pool
of minority faculty in graduate programs in Illinois and
what statewide or institutional policies and practices might
increase the number choosing faculty positions in Illinois.
- The hiring process and campus leadership - exploring the
academic search process, campus programs that support faculty
diversity, and statewide efforts that could foster greater
diversity on campuses.
- Retention of diverse faculty and campus climate - studying
whether a supportive climate exists for underrepresented
faculty in Illinois and what steps at the state or campus
level might produce a more welcoming environment for minority
faculty.
Public testimony will be limited to five minutes; written
testimony can be submitted at the hearing or mailed to the
Board offices at 431 East Adams Street, Second Floor, Springfield,
62701-1418. All speakers must register, which may be done
