SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) has begun the process for hiring an Executive Director to succeed Daniel J. LaVista, who announced recently his intention to take a similar position with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in August. The Board voted to name Thomas R. Lamont, a Springfield attorney and IBHE Vice Chairman, as acting Executive Director of the agency while it undertakes a search for a permanent chief executive officer.

Lamont has served on the Board of Higher Education since July 1999, first as the representative of public universities and since May 2003 as a public member named by Governor Rod R. Blagojevich. He was elected the Board's Vice Chairman in June 2003. He will step down from his Board position and take a leave of absence from the law firm of Brown, Hay, and Stephens of Springfield while he serves as acting executive director.

Lamont has been an active Board member, chairing the Board's Priorities, Productivity, and Accountability Committee and serving on various other committees. He has served as a Board member and Chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
